Drake Bay · Corcovado
The most biodiverse area of the country: tapirs, scarlet macaws and Caño Island.
The gateway to Corcovado
Drake Bay is on the northern Osa Peninsula, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. It is a remote destination, with no big hotels or cities, where the rainforest reaches the sea. From here you visit Corcovado National Park and Caño Island.
Things to do
- Corcovado National Park: tapirs, four monkey species, scarlet macaws, anteaters and, with a lot of luck, wild cats. Sirena Station, in the heart of the park, is visited on a long day trip or with an overnight stay.
- Caño Island: snorkeling and diving in clear water, with turtles, rays, reefs and schools of fish.
- Whale and dolphin watching in season.
- Coastal trail south from Drake, with deserted beaches.
- Night tour: frogs, insects and spiders in the rainforest.
Before you go (important)
- Entering Corcovado requires a certified guide, a rule in place since 2014. Spots, especially at Sirena, are limited: book in advance.
- Permits for Caño Island also have a daily cap.
- Boat arrivals usually involve a beach landing: bring sandals and a dry bag.
Tips
- Stay at least three nights: transfers are long and it is worth making the most of them.
- Bring cash: not every place takes cards and there are few ATMs.
- Electricity and internet can be limited. It is part of the experience.
Getting there
The classic route is by road to Sierpe, then by boat along the river and the coast, about an hour to an hour and a half (our quote already includes the boat). There are also domestic flights to the Drake airstrip. It pairs very well with Uvita and the Costa Ballena.
