Jacó
The closest beach to San José, with surf, zip lines and the Tárcoles river crocodiles.
The closest beach to San José
Jacó is the closest large beach to the capital, ideal if you have only a few days or want to start or end your trip by the sea. It has a lively atmosphere, waves for learning to surf, plenty of restaurants and adventure options, and nature close by.
Things to do
- Surf: the main beach is one of the most popular for learning, with schools along the shore. Playa Hermosa, to the south, has more powerful waves for experienced surfers.
- Tárcoles River crocodiles: from the bridge over the river you can see huge crocodiles, and boat tours are available.
- Carara National Park: a transition forest between the dry north and the humid south, famous for scarlet macaws.
- Zip lines and ATV tours in the hills behind the beach.
- Sunsets and nightlife in town.
Tips
- Jacó has strong currents in some areas: swim where there are lifeguards or ask before going in.
- At Carara, scarlet macaws are best seen early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
- It is a good choice for your last night: it is close to the airport and you avoid a long transfer on flight day.
Getting there
Jacó is about an hour and a half to two hours from San José and Juan Santamaría airport via Route 27. It pairs very well with Manuel Antonio, just over an hour south, or with Monteverde and La Fortuna on a classic route.
