Monteverde
Cloud forest with quetzals, hanging bridges and one of the longest zip lines in the country.
Walking among the clouds
Monteverde sits in the Tilarán mountains, where Caribbean moisture meets Pacific air and creates a cloud forest: moss-covered trees, orchids, giant ferns and mist drifting through the canopy. It is one of the most biodiverse places in the country and a top destination for birdwatching.
Things to do
- Cloud forest reserves: the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve and the Santa Elena Reserve have marked trails. With a guide it is much easier to spot the resplendent quetzal, hummingbirds and other birds.
- Hanging bridges: walk the forest at treetop level, where much of the wildlife lives.
- Zip lines: Monteverde has some of the longest cables in the country, with forest views and, on clear days, views toward the Gulf of Nicoya.
- Night tour: the forest changes after dark; frogs, insects and tarantulas are common, and with luck you will see sloths or kinkajous.
- Coffee and chocolate: several farms in the area offer tours from bean to cup.
Tips
- Bring a jacket: because of the altitude, mornings and nights are cool, very different from the beach.
- Wear closed shoes and bring a light rain jacket: trails can be damp.
- Book the night tour in advance: groups are small and fill up.
- Two nights are ideal to combine a reserve, the bridges and a night tour without rushing.
Getting there
Monteverde is about three and a half hours from San José. The last stretch is mountain road, so shuttles or private transfers are the most comfortable option. It pairs very well with La Fortuna (around Lake Arenal) and with the beaches of Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio.
