Sarapiquí
Lowland rainforest and powerful rivers. Great for rafting and learning about cacao.
Rivers and lowland rainforest
Sarapiquí is a region in the Northern Zone with powerful rivers, tropical rainforest and a long tradition of scientific research. It is less known than other destinations, and that is exactly why it offers a calmer, more authentic experience.
Things to do
- Rafting: the Sarapiquí River has sections for beginners and others with more action, ideal for a first adventure.
- La Selva Biological Station: one of the most renowned tropical research stations in the world, with guided walks on primary forest trails.
- Chocolate tour: several farms show the journey of cacao from tree to bar, with tastings.
- Hanging bridges and night walks: colorful frogs, insects and, with luck, sloths and toucans.
- Birdwatching: the area is excellent for toucans, parrots and the great green macaw.
Tips
- Bring quick-dry clothes and a rain jacket: it is one of the rainiest areas of the country, and the rain is part of the charm.
- Use insect repellent and closed shoes for hikes.
- Two nights are enough to combine rafting, chocolate and a guided walk.
Getting there
Sarapiquí is an hour and a half to two hours from San José. The route crosses Braulio Carrillo National Park, with forest-covered mountain scenery. It pairs very well with La Fortuna to the west or with Tortuguero toward the Caribbean.
